What is music to me?

Studio session

What is music to me?

Music to me is an everyday ritual. An escape to express myself, and a way to be heard.

I use music to fuel the passion and desire I have to create. As an artist, I know deep down there is something inside of me that I want to share. These thoughts and feelings aren’t so easily expressed by words, but better understood through notes and melodies of music.

I’m not the best musician, and I don’t claim to be; what I am is an artist. An artist who expresses himself through the medium of music. Beats and instrumentals to be exact.

I make it for my own personal outlet and also to enjoy the creations of my passions. It gives me something to do, and it’s also a means to an end.

Music to me is also a job.

I have been making music “professionally”, if you want to call it that, since October 2007. In that time it went from extremely part time, to full time and then some.

At times I have been frustrated and thought about giving up. In those moments I felt like giving up I had to regain my wits and composure, rethink my strategy and reformat my approach.

When you create music for fun, it’s a beautiful thing. It’s carefree. When you introduce the business to your art, the picture gets a little blurry. It’s hard to juggle the many hats you have to wear and your focus becomes distracted.

The important thing to remember is your love of what you do. One thing I can suggest is love as hard as you work. It can make all the difference.

I love music.

The meaning of Beat Brokerz

Beat Brokerz

What is the meaning of Beat Brokerz in the eyes of Royal?

It’s a hard question to put into words, what the meaning of Beat Brokerz is to me. My interpretations of what people wanted, as far as a beat selling website, as well as my own experiences, inspired the design behind Beat Brokerz. The idea was a business network for music professionals to get together and do business.

There are two sides to most business transactions, a buyer and a seller. In a real world, with actual stores, filled with tangible goods to see, touch and feel, it makes for easy transactions. In the business of online beat sales, that’s not always the case, it can be a little sketchy.

Anyone can post music online and claim authorship and copyright and try to license it to you without owning the rights to do so. Or artists can send the money to the producers, but the producers never send the beats or what they sent isn’t exactly what they promised. Soon the producer stops responding, and the artist doesn’t have what they paid for.

These things happen. Buying something you have no rights to use, or not even getting what you paid for has left a bad taste in a lot of artists mouths. Artists may be skeptical about buying beats because of prior experiences with buying online.

On the other end of the spectrum, we have artists who pose as customers. They will take up your time talking about their music, and what they intend to do on your beats, all the while claiming they want to buy your beats.

Often, producers find that was not the case. They might as well file a missing persons report when it comes time to find those “customers” to actually “buy” the beats. This happens all too often and is much better than the other current problem posed by alleged “customers“. Chargebacks. Yes, a Paypal chargeback. Those two words spoken together have been known to make a producer cringe. A terrible consequence of dealing with an unprofessional person using stolen credit cards or fraudulently lying about a false charge on their cards. This results in the money being reclaimed by Paypal, with a $20 penalty fee as the cherry on top.

Time and money wasted is a common occurrence in the field of online music licensing. The growing problem of an unprofessional approach taken by a majority of online musicians is damaging the credibility of hard working producers and artists who want to make a living creating music professionally.

These problems needed a solution. A lot of beat selling websites are really good at one thing but lack in other areas that are very important for any music professionals.

Here is a list of 3 solutions I saw for beat selling websites.

  1. Accountability- When a business transaction has occurred, both parties should be held accountable. Beat Brokerz makes sure the transaction is legitimate on both ends with customer verifications and the delivery of the correct files in the format listed. We also create a verifiable license document for each order for both parties.
  2. Customer support- When a beat gets sold and something goes wrong, who do you call? Let us deal with the orders. With Beat Brokerz, no matter if you are a customer who just purchased a license and wants to know where their beats are, or a producer with general questions about using the site, there is someone you can call or someone to respond to your emails.
  3. A fair marketplace- The truth is, when you send or receive money from a stranger online, you run the risk of the transaction being fraudulent, or not to your satisfaction. Beat Brokerz is the middleman in the transaction, to level the playing field and make everyone accountable, and offer support in the process to make for both a fair, easy and pleasurable experience.

The solution? Producers can avoid chargebacks, take advantage of our time-saving customer support and have a system to store your beat files and fulfill your orders. Artists have someone to contact for help buying and receiving their beats with a money back guarantee plus an account to keep record of purchase, licenses, negotiations and beat files. Beat Brokerz offers these solutions.

The list could go on, but for now, to keep it simple, Beat Brokerz is the starting grounds for new music to be made, from composing to recording. Beat Brokerz is the network, website and #1 place to buy and sell beats online.

In short, the meaning of Beat Brokerz through my eyes is ‘Freedom’ –  the power and right to buy or sell beats and collaborate as one wants without hindrance or restraint. Beat Brokerz offers the power to be free and create new music to distribute to the masses. The online music revolution is ours. If the industry fails, we must succeed.

Join the music revolution and be a part of history.

Who Am I?

who i am

“I envisioned a way I could sell beats for producers and have them be in control of every aspect, from the uploading of their files to the pricing and terms of their license contracts.”

Who am I?

I’m Royal aka Jon Dough. I’m the CEO and owner of Beat Brokerz. I’m an entrepreneur in the business of licensing instrumental beats.

As a lifelong artist, I stumbled into music naturally. What started as poems, rhymes and verses turned into a passion to create music from all aspects. I studied everything I could find online and networked with a lot of professional producers. What started as a search for beats to rap on turned into a new found passion to create.

In an attempt to save money, I slowly transitioned into making my own beats to rap on. At first I made crappy beats. Horrible. Non quantized garbage…nobody could rap on them. When I realized there was talent necessary in composing music soundtracks, I quickly switched to sampling.

A fellow artist sold me my first copy of Fruity Loops 3, a bunch of drum sounds and a folder of songs to sample. He also taught me the ins and outs of using the software. Prior to that, I attempted to use the software in the previous version but was clueless as to how it worked. Having someone teach me and give me a formula on how to make a sampled beat definitely helped.

Sampling was a much easier way to make beats. I discovered that I could take small slices and cuts from sampled loops of almost any song and make a beat. Adding effects and filters to the sounds helped hide the fact it was sampled. The ability to warp and bend sound frequencies is amazing. Once I began licensing my music, I realized the responsibilities of licensing that music to professional artists.

It was back to composing. I had to start from scratch. Learning how to write my own music, melodies and chord progressions was a long process that continues today. I never stop learning. Once I composed and sold my first license, I was hooked. Music was already a passion I pursued aggressively, investing lots of time and money into learning and perfecting my craft. Finally making money doing what I love to do changed my sole desire.

From that point on I’ve been chasing my dreams. Learning to compose music at a later age in life definitely exposed my learning curve to those younger than myself. However, working in sales – being good at sales – is my advantage. I am good at selling beats.

A lot of producers I talked to said they had troubles selling their beats. I told them about all the sales I had made for myself and a fellow producer whose beats I sold alongside my own catalog on my website. They expressed to me how tired they were of artists not following through with the purchases they promised to make. The difference was, not only did I put my phone number all over my website, I answered my phone every time it rang. Producers I dealt with tended to be introverted and shy, not wanting to deal so directly with people. Building relationships, building trust, was my advantage in making more sales.

They were interested in my knack for closing the deal and making beat sales. They wanted to focus on making their music, not have the nagging business clog up their time. To my surprise, the majority of these producers were much younger than me, most still in high school. Having to go to school or work is a full time job in itself. Having to both make beats and sell them too was proving to be too much. I became a “go-to” guy to sell beats. People I knew would recommend me to others and word of mouth grew.

Selling beats was a job I was willing to take, and the amount of producers wanting me to sell their beats grew. Because I was managing a small website and personally dealing with each and every file, I had to make sure that I had the necessary means to properly sell a beat.

Selling a beat, and then getting the files was something I found to be troublesome. I went to every effort to get the tracked out files to beats I knew I could sell. If I put the time and effort into selling the beats, I wanted to quickly and efficiently take care of the customers needs, so I could pay the producer his/her money.

Some beats sold as soon as I would upload them, others would hardly sell at all. That posed a problem, when your honesty comes into question. Having people think I was selling their beats and not paying them weighed heavy on my mind. I needed a solution.

I envisioned a way I could sell beats for producers and have them be in control of every aspect, from the uploading of their files to the pricing and terms of their license contracts.

The Beat Brokerz solution was created for producers interested in hosting their content to stream, license and download instantly. Every dilemma and hurdle I faced in my experience selling beats online was the building blocks of the beat selling tools I saw in Beat Brokerz. With the help of an old friend, and now partner, http://www.BeatBrokerz.com was created.

So who am I? I’m Royal aka Jon Dough, CEO of the company I’m so passionate about.

Determination and Success.

determinatino wordle

How do you stay determined when life keeps pushing you down?

How do you stay determined when no one buys your beats or wants you on their beat? It seems like everyone hits a rough patch here and there. The #1 rule in my own success was never get comfortable.

Staying hungry is important because thinking up new and improved ways to do what you do is a never ending journey. Learning and educating yourself on what it takes to succeed requires determination as well. The fact is, the time it takes to do something will pass regardless, so why not put in the effort along the way?

How do you find creativity when you’ve hit a dry patch?

Creativity is not like a light switch for most people, myself included. I cannot just turn it on. There are moments when it hits, and I’m inspired to create, and other times I feel as though it is completely forced, and I have a case of beat block. I’ve had it last for as short as a few hours and as long as 6 months.

Finding creativity in these instances takes determination, to see through the rough patch, and keep on trekking. The important thing to remember is, it’s normal, and it’s up to you to see through it, or else you give up. If you are determined to be a music producer, you will not give up.

What is determination?

Determination, to me, is a feeling I get. I can best describe it as a laser focus. There is only one thing I see, and I’m so focused I am determined to make it happen.

Reaching your success can be a long drawn out process. It may seem slow and boring, because nothing is happening right away. Think of it this way, if you plant a seed in the dirt, it won’t instantly sprout, right?  You water and you wait. Then once it finally sprouts, it still needs to be nurtured to grow to its full potential so that it can finally offer you the fruits of your labors. Then you can reap what you sow and the same goes for success. Your determination is the work that gets you from point A to point B. Everyone starts out at point A, but it takes determination to continue on until and reach point B.

What is success?

A lot of people ask “Is success just money or is it achievement, gratification, humility, the ability to help others etc..?”

Success is different for everyone. In my opinion, it’s all the above mentioned things and more. Success is what you make of it. It’s seeing the cup half full, or looking at a situation in a positive light, enjoying the moment, making a beat sale, selling a beat for someone else…. the list could go on. Every achievement I make is what I consider success.

I’m most proud of the relationships I’ve built and the website I helped design and create, but being someone available to help others became a defining moment in my life, and to me, that is success.

Can you have success without determination?

Without a doubt, there are lucky opportunities people are struck with every single day. From landing a placement from a random online download, or meeting an important figure in the music industry. It’s not to say they weren’t determined before, but sometimes things happens quickly for some with minimal effort, and that is just the luck of the draw.

For others, they have to strategically play their hands, and without determination, success is nowhere to be found. Staying determined is the key to unlocking your success. Patience, hard work, dedication, determination are all tools used in achieving your success.

What did you do when you felt like giving up?

When I felt like giving up, I made it a conscious effort to take a break, and rethink what I was doing and why I was doing it. You have to walk away from things sometimes in order to regain your focus to see the completed picture clearly.

There were many times i wanted to just quit, and give up, thinking I would never make it in the music industry because all my time was devoted to others.

Sometimes life sets you out to do certain things, and it takes a long journey filled with different roads until you finally get on track. I realized I was here to help others.

When I felt like giving up I remembered all the people who count on me, and I decided I wouldn’t let them down.

How do you continue to stay determined, personally?

Staying determined for me means staying positive. Focusing on what I’m doing, why I’m doing it and researching ways I can improve help me see the bigger picture.

I know that if I stay at this and continue to help those who want help, Beat Brokerz will become the #1 Beat Selling Website in the world. Those thoughts are what keep me determined.

I’m determined for success.

Download Free Beats

when producers won't give you free beats2

  • Download Free Beats

Most rappers looking to download free beats often overlook one very important fact; a free download does not mean you own any rights to use the beat commercially. The difference between a free beat download and a paid license is how you can use that beat.

  • Music Catalogs Online

In the digital world, internet websites host outlets for musicians to set up shop and distribute digital music. Beat composers and instrumentalists are commonly uploading and streaming their online beat catalogs to these sites. Many times the beats are made available for free download and more likely than not those beats are also for sale.

  • Digital Business Cards

The download option is utilized by many producers, giving away a tagged audio sample Mp3 for demo purposes. It’s a way for the composer to offer a digital business card. This allows the artist a chance to write to the beat and possibly record a rough demo before buying a license to distribute the song. With the information available on the file the artist can come back and license the beat.

  • Music Licensing

Music licensing allows you to use the free download commercially by publishing it with a song you have created over the instrumental. Licenses are terms of use for royalty free distribution of your song. The royalty free distribution allows you to give away and/or sell a specific amount of copies for a specified amount of time. Which ever one is reached first ends the license term. For example, a basic license, on average, is good for a year and 2,000 copies.

  • Where to License Beats

The problem with licensing beats is finding the right place to buy beats online. The founders of Beat Brokerz realized there was a lot of uncertainty when purchasing instrumentals online and came up with a solution. As beat brokers, we make sure that transactions are conducted professionally. We make sure every deal is complete, fair, documented, fulfilled, and guaranteed. As a broker, we represent your best interests and provide peace of mind when buying music.

  • The Beat Brokerz Difference

Other beat sites are just fancy vending machines that leave you completely vulnerable to bad agreements, bad service, and multitudes of other technical frustrations. We provide professionals who are serious about creating music a way to verify licenses, lookup copyrights, warranty purchases, and are willing to stand up (and intervene if needed) for your rights as a buyer.
